Johnson & Johnson (J&J) is recruiting for a Scientific Director to join our Neuroscience Discovery group based in either Springhouse, PA, USA or Beerse, Belgium. The role will require the candidate to work across time zones as we are a global organization.

In the role of Scientific Director, you will lead a team that supports innovative platforms e.g., complex IPSC cellular models of disease and high content imaging to identify novel targets and validate them sufficiently to enter the Neuroscience Discovery Portfolio. You will work closely with our Data Science colleagues to leverage large data sets e.g. proteomics and transcriptomics, as well as genetic and real-world evidence data to shape the discovery portfolio. Your group will be instrumental for us to continue building a transformational Neuroscience portfolio to develop novel treatments for Neurodegenerative and Neuropsychiatric Diseases. This will require excellent communication and teamwork skills, an appetite for innovation, and a keen attention to detail and organization. You should have a considerable sense of purpose and drive, be mindful of the considerable unmet medical need and imperative to generate impactful therapeutics in Neuroscience and embody the critical importance of translation of insights from biology and data science to the vision and mission of Johnson & Johnson.

Your Key Responsibilities:

  • Identifying and validating novel druggable targets for the treatment of Neuropsychiatric and Neurodegenerative diseases that are aligned with our Disease Area Strategy using complex human cell models of neuropsychiatric and neurodegenerative disease.

  • Collaborating closely within the Global Biology function and with other functions, including but not limited to, Data Sciences, Discovery Technology & Molecular Pharmacology and In Silico Discovery to integrate data from human cell models, human omics data, and other datasets coupled to AI and machine learning.

  • Build and mentor a highly motivated team that delivers well-defined objectives.

  • Effective oral and written communication to ensure alignment across functions and within the neuroscience department.

  • Maintains a high degree of understanding of external environment including:

  • approaches to accelerate drug development using high dimensionality data (e.g., high content imaging, transcriptomics and proteomics data) combined with advanced analytics.

  • value of human data in precision drug development including molecular datasets and human cell models

  • This position will typically have 1-2 direct reports.

Qualifications

Required:

  • A PhD degree with a minimum of 10 years of experience in Neuroscience research or 7 years of demonstrable experience in Pharmaceutical R&D.

  • Demonstrated experience working with human cell models to develop a platform used identify and validate novel druggable targets for Neurodegenerative and Neuropsychiatry disease.

  • A proven track record of target identification and validation in the Neuroscience field, this should be reflected in publications in peer reviewed journals.

  • Demonstrated understanding of the drug discovery process.

  • Ability to develop and maintain strong internal network with cross-functional groups required to operationalize and drive portfolio progression.

  • Tangible experience in leading people of varying levels and experience within a matrix environment including setting goals, holding others accountable, managing poor performance, and developing others to reach their full potential.

  • Proactively creates a purpose driven environment by aligning Johnson & Johnson’s Credo and Leadership Imperatives with the strategies and goals of the team and enterprise.

  • Broadens external scientific visibility and reputation of J&J by publications and participating in scientific seminars and discussion forums.

  • Crafts presentations of research outcomes and progress to senior leaders by owning the analysis of results and providing critical feedback.

  • This is a global role. Domestic and International travel is required. 25% travel will be required.

Preferred:

  • Experience in managing operational aspects of their teams (e.g., budget, performance, and compliance), as well as implementing workforce and succession plans to meet business needs.

  • Ability to initiate and drive external collaborations with academic, Contract Research Organization (CRO), or biotech partners.
