The Applied Science Map Service team is an innovative engineering and applied science team working on state-of-the-art deep learning models, large language models and pioneering conversational map and direction search experiences.

The team builds solutions based on attention architectures, graph neural networks, learning-to-rank and other ML models to improve the search services and experiences by. You will have impact in areas including scalable query understanding and annotation solutions, matching, retrieval and ranking of map and direction search results and attention and GNN approaches to ETA prediction in routing; etc.

Responsibilities

  • Drive projects from design through implementation, experimentation and finally shipping to our users.

  • Identify and understand preprocessing data used in deriving user insights and training large scale models.

  • Bring new technology and approaches into production by applying long-term research efforts to solve immediate product needs.

  • Collaboratewith and bridge the gap between researchers (in community across the company, Microsoft Research [MSR], or in their own organizations) and development teams.

  • Begin negotiations across teams to ensure cutting edge technology is being applied to products in a practical way that meets key business objectives.

  • Develop an understanding of research approaches used across a group or organization to leverage (and not re-invent) solutions.

  • Own end-to-end development of state-of-the-art machine learning, deep learning algorithms and techniques leveraging the data (i.e. text, location map search data, and routing road network data) for analysing and building, debugging and supporting world-class search and information retrieval products.

  • Prototype, design and develop fundamental technologies and drive the analysis and applied research to enable better search experiences for consumers and enterprise alike.

  • Working in a diverse geographically distributed team environment where collaboration and innovation are valued. Qualifications

Mimimum/Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND related experience (e.g., statistics predictive analytics, research)

  • OR Master's Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)

  • OR Doctorate in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)

  • OR equivalent experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience creating publications (e.g., patents, libraries, peer-reviewed academic papers).

  • Experience presenting at conferences or other events in the outside research/industry community as an invited speaker.

  • Experience conducting research as part of a research program (in academic or industry settings).

  • Experience developing and deploying live production systems, as part of a product team.

  • Experience developing and deploying products or systems at multiple points in the product cycle from ideation to shipping.

  • Relevant internship or prior work experience, e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research, working with maps data.
