Job Description
The Applications Scientist works at the intersection of development, sales support, and the scientific community. This person collaborates with Applications, Technology, Systems, and Software groups to ensure that product requirements are well understood, developed, implemented, and thoroughly tested. Successful Applications Scientist develops detailed knowledge about the application of our tools and understand the implications of using and testing software when sophisticated hardware interactions are at stake.
The Applications Scientist will provide customer and market feedback to Product Marketing Managers, Product Execution Managers, and the development team. This person participates in defining the needs for new product development; conducts customer demonstrations and jobs (e.g. for concept-proof of new applications); participates in technical discussions and collaborates on applications training with the customers.
General Responsibilities
Demonstrates good independent judgment and thinking to develop creative ways or select known methods and techniques for acquiring solutions.
Interactions and coordination between functional areas, other departments, or customers, external collaborators, and the company. Networks with senior internal and external personnel in the respective areas of expertise interact with supervisors, group leaders, customers, and peers.
Acts as an advisor to peers and project members to meet schedules and/or resolve technical problems. Ensures that activities are carried out according to the principle of “Customer focus in all that we do”.
The ability to set and build the right working climate. Follow work safety, fire safety, hygiene of work, and other regulatory standards.
Specific responsibilities
Perform system (SW, applications, instrument) testing and evaluation, and provide test plans and consolidated test reports.
Feed the R&D team and product groups with information and customer feedback. Translate customer needs into workable solutions and technical specifications. Recommend technical direction for potential applications or use of products consistent with customer requirements and feasibility.
Prepare and perform demos, customer jobs, and customer training. Handle customer samples, data, and related information. Act as ‘Equipment Owner’: keep equipment in job-ready condition and report the problems.
Develop Best Practice Documents (BPDs) for reproducible distribution of application implementation and training of customers by applications specialists. Deliver publications (scientific papers, conference abstracts, application notes).
Deliver groundbreaking, specific marketing and sales collateral to the Product Marketing group for incorporation into marketing, sales training, and sales material.
Maintain and expand the pool of XDB and TEM solution expertise (technology, methodology) for all markets.
Collaborate on projects with external partners.
Follow the effective documents IMS, EMS, and managing documentation.
The Requirements
This position is ideal for an engineer/scientist with a background in electron microscopy and/or focused ion beams. The position is appropriate for a candidate with recent experience applying microscopy technology in a relevant commercial/research/production establishment. The successful candidate will possess:
MSc or PhD in Biology, Material Science, Physics, Engineering or a combination of education and experience that demonstrates the required skills
Able to work independently as well as with cross-functional and cross-cultural teams
Hands-on experience with FIB/SEM systems in cross-section, TEM lamella prep and/or 3D analytics use-case
Knowledge of advanced technology and diagnostics as well as operational optimization experience of other analytical equipment, e.g. optical microscopes, various energy dispersive spectrometers, or other analytical techniques
In-depth knowledge of contrast formation and image simulation methods in electron microscopy would be an advantage
Experience with statistical data processing might be an advantage
Knowledge of Python is a plus
Proven experience with using software in complex products with extensive hardware interactions
Strong communicative skills (both verbal and written), result-oriented, work in a dynamic environment
Ability to write (scientific) papers and other publications
Ability to travel both domestically as well as internationally and possession of a valid passport
Language skills: English, willing to learn Czech
