Description

Under general supervision, to maintain and make repairs tob uildings, related structures and pertinent equipment therein; to perform themore difficult tasks involved in the trade as indicated by the title of the class; as required, toperform the routine or moderately difficult tasks of the related trades, and toperform related work as required.

Examples of Duties

Performs a variety of tasks that are typical of trades classes in the Building Trades Worker class group listed below.

Carpentry:

• Performs alterations to offices and interiors of buildings.

• Tears out, rebuilds or builds wall sections and stairways, moves partitions, installs casing, installs glass and finishes off casings by staining or painting.

• Lays flooring and roofing.

• Hangs doors.

• Installs and replaces locks and other door hardware.

• Applies interior trim.

• Repairs furniture, roofs, doors, windows, screens and other wood or equipment in or on buildings.

• Builds forms for concrete construction work.

• Builds and repairs shelves, bins, screens, fences, ladders and tool boxes.

• Glazes windows

  Bricklaying:

• Lays bricks and other masonry in the minor construction or repair of face brick veneer, arches, groins, columns, chimneys, flues, fireplaces, furnaces, tunnels, manholes and tile and cement block walls.

• Repairs interior or exterior walls, partitions, foundations or corners.

• Repairs brick sewers, walls and manholes.

• Patches mortar cracks in manhole walls and sewers with cement.

  Plastering:

• Performs plastering tasks.

• Patches holes and cracks in plaster.

• Tears down looser plaster.

• Mixes, prepares and applies new plaster.

• Repairs and installs drywall.

• Closes up windows or other small openings.

• Installs and replaces wood or metal lath.

  Painting:

• Prepares surfaces for painting.

• Scraps, sands, washes, applies paint and varnish remover.

• Brushes with wire brush, putties cracks and nail holes in wood, patches small holes and cracks in plaster and primes new walls before painting.

• Applies paint, enamel, varnish, stain or other protective and/or decorative coatings to interiors or exteriors of buildings and other structures.

• Paints tables, chairs, benches, or other furniture.

  Glazing:

• Replaces glass where required in wooden or metal frames.

• Cuts various kinds of thickness of glass to specified sizes and shapes for cabinets, table tops, showcases, transoms, skylights, doors, greenhouses, mirrors, closets, office partitions, and windows.

• Removes and replaces defective window sash.

  Plumbing:

• Performs non-permit plumbing.

• Installs, replaces and maintains fixtures including lavatory facilities, drinking fountains, sprinkling systems, kitchen sinks, and laundry equipment.

• Wipes joints, solders fittings, cuts and threads pipe.

• Welds cracked and broken parts.

• Tests joints and pipe systems for leaks.

  Steamfitting:

• Inspects, maintains and alters heating equipment in office buildings, garages, shops and similar structures.

• Inspects, repairs, installs or replaces steam pipes, stop valves, reduce valves, traps, radiators, gauges and other accessories and fittings.

• Grinds and repacks valves.

• Repacks pumps and replaces worn pipe line gaskets.

• Constructs and installs pipe support brackets.

• Repairs pipes, valves, fittings and other auxiliaries on steam and hot water boilers.

• Covers steam or hot water pipes with insulation material.

• Inspects or repairs small low pressure steam or hot water heating plants.

  Roofing:

• Covers roofs with roofing materials such as composition shingles or sheets, wood shingles, or asphalt and gravel.

• Applies alternate layers of roofing paper, hot tar and surface layers of gravel to build up roof surfaces.

• Cuts, fits and nails metal flashing wherever necessary.

• Lays various types of commercial compositions in surfacing roofs such as rolling and asphalt shingling.

• Lines slate for roofing and nails to the roof.

• Punches holes through slate to fit ridges, valleys, and edges.

• Covers exposed nails with roofing cement.

• Measures and marks location of each row of wooden shingles.

• Overlaps and nails shingles.

• Saws or cuts shingles to fit corners.

Sheet Metal:

• Cuts, forms, assembles and installs sheet metal objects such as gutters and downpipes, sheet metal roofs, heating, ventilating, and dust collecting ducts, machine guards, rubbish and garbage receptacles and cover, car and coach body panels and frames, metal cabinets.

• Operates sheet metal machines such as beader, brake, folder, shears, punch press and spot welder.

• Repairs and rebuilds gasoline tanks, battery boxes, engine hoods, and other automotive parts.

  Refrigeration:

• Performs refrigeration system repairs and maintenance tasks.

• Installs, alters repairs, and charges refrigeration equipment, appliances and air conditioners.

• Tests and replaces faulty compressors, relays, controls, evaporators and condensers.

• Tests for and isolates refrigeration leaks or electrical problems.

• Checks system pressure and vacuum.

• Rebuilds component parts.

Minimum Qualifications

High School graduation or G.E.D. from a trade or vocational high school or equivalent.

Two years of demonstrated experience working in one or a combination of the trades listed in the job description.

KNOWLEDGE OF:

• Methods, tools, materials, and equipment used in the trade as indicated by the title of the class.

• Methods, tools, materials and equipment used in other building trades

  Skill in:

• Working in one specialty as indicted by the title of the class.

• Physical and mechanical dexterity.

• Observation

  Ability to:

• Display initiative in handling building maintenance problems.

• Acquire additional knowledge to remain current in field.

• Communicate effectively, orally and in writing.

• Interact with others with tact and diplomacy.

LICENSE, CERTIFICATION AND OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Employees in this class will be required to provide the tools necessary to perform the work assigned and will be required, when necessary, to operate a motor vehicle; Valid State of Michigan Operator License required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: Work is performed in a variety of shop, plant, field and office locations and occasionally in uncomfortable climatic conditions.

RETIREMENT BENEFITS

City Employees Retirement System

As a regular City employee you automatically become a member of the General Retirement System. This entitles you to a retirement allowance after:

• Completion of thirty (30) years of service;
