Pfizer Senior Associate Scientist in La Jolla, California

ROLE SUMMARY

The Biochemistry Department of Pfizer Oncology Research in La Jolla, CA is seeking a full time scientist to join our drug discovery team.

The enzymologist/biochemist will make important contributions to the discovery and pre-clinical development of oncology therapeutics, and will contribute to our molecular and biochemical understanding of enzymes that mediate epigenetic modifications of histone proteins and DNA. The scientist will be actively engaged in drug discovery activities for modulators of epigenetic targets, including the characterization of epigenetic enzymes and their inhibitors as well as histone and DNA methylation profiling and selectivity screening. In particular, the biochemist will be responsible for the development and validation of robust, reproducible plate-based enzyme assays. This will include kinetic and mechanistic studies to characterize enzyme targets, biochemical pathways, and mechanism of action of lead compounds.

The candidate will be responsible for testing compounds in biochemical assays, data analysis, and proper database publication of data. The candidate will participate on project teams, providing insight and technical expertise required for project progression. The individual will work closely with cell biologists and medicinal chemists, and apply strong biochemistry knowledge/skills to oncology small molecule drug discovery and development of innovative therapies.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES

A successful candidate will be required to develop and execute kinetic and mechanistic enzyme assays to understand epigenetic protein targets, their function and regulation, along with determining mechanism and binding site location of inhibitors, and protein/ligand SAR. The candidate will also be responsible for the development and performance of robust, automated biochemical assays for support of a cancer epigenetic drug discovery platform.

Participation on multi-disciplinary project teams, including oral presentation of results, and contribution to the understanding of the biochemical pathways associated with tumor epigenetic changes associated with tumor development and progression is also expected.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • BS/MS Enzymologist/Biochemist with two or more years of experience in understanding the enzymes and proteins associated with cancer epigenetics.

  • Experience in the development of assays and bioanalytical methods for studying enzyme activity and mechanism and for evaluating inhibitor potency and mechanism.

  • Must have strong technical abilities; be skilled in the biochemical evaluation of enzymes including enzyme kinetics and in the development of automated plate-based biochemical assays.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills required.

  • Preference given to candidates with pharmaceutical/biotech drug discovery experience in evaluating small-molecule inhibitors against epigenetic enzyme targets such as histone methyltransferase or histone deacetylases and candidates with experience in Mass Spectrometry.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be able to work at a lab bench.

  • Work with standard radioactive materials (3H, 32P, etc).

  • Experience in enzyme kinetics and mathematical modeling strongly preferred.
