Los Alamos National Laboratory Research Technologist 1 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

The successful candidate will be the primary points of contact at the working level for Sigma Division in all areas with emphasis in the forming, foundry, machining, and welding sections with regard to control systems and maintenance of equipment. In addition, this individual will be responsible for capturing knowledge and developing newer technicians and technologists in the same area. The work will require the individual to utilize his/her knowledge as a subject matter expert in electrical/mechanical maintenance of forming, foundry and welding equipment, as well as with cutting edge technology related to these processing areas. The successful candidate will be required to:

  • Prepare and implement maintenance plans with minimal supervision to optimize and ensure capability of maintenance and growth in the forming, foundry, machining and welding areas.

  • Execute repairs, maintenance, and analytical predictions based on relevant data for upkeep and/or improvements on programmatic equipment.

  • Communicate results through internal reports, technical publications and/or progress reports.

  • Lead the removal, site preparation and installation of new equipment around the Sigma Complex

  • Mentor and train new technicians in the areas of electrical/mechanical system equipment in Sigma

  • Prepare and maintain authorizing documents to perform work safely and compliantly in the Sigma Complex

  • Work with vendors to maintain, troubleshoot, and repair instrumentation and equipment in the facility

  • Ensure that the work areas remain presentable and unobscured by maintenance activities.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated knowledge in mechanical/electrical equipment operation and maintenance (i.e. pneumatic, CNC, hydraulic, vacuum)

  • Familiar with theory of operation regarding CNC based equipment

  • Demonstrated knowledge of instrument troubleshooting and repair of programmatic equipment

  • Demonstrated knowledge in advanced maintenance practices within a manufacturing environment.

  • Extensive knowledge on common and specialized tools

  • Demonstrated experience in working independently as well as within a team environment.

  • Demonstrated experience in meeting scheduled deliverables or milestones with fluctuations in priorities

  • Fluent in common software packages including Excel, Word, PowerPoint

  • Demonstrated strong verbal and written communication skills

  • Ability to obtain a Q-clearance which typically requires US citizenship.

Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution and 2 years related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience preparing technical test plans and reports.

  • Experience with CNC based equipment maintenance.

  • Experience developing engineering improvements or technical upgrades.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of best practices using governing documents such as Integrated Work Documents (IWD) and checklist environments

  • Experience in accurately documenting and navigating maintenance work in approved systems of record such as Computerized Maintenance Management Software (CMMS) and Enterprise Asset Management Systems (EAM)

Work Environment

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 (https://www.directives.doe.gov/directives-documents/400-series/0472.2-BOrder-chg1-pgchg) for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
