    Position description

SUMMARY OF ORGANIZATION/UNIT

The Ethnic Studies Certificate Program, sponsored by UCLA Extension Program (UNEX), and housed in Center X in the School of Education and Information Studies, is a four-course program that prepares practicing teachers to teach Ethnic Studies in schools. Students complete coursework and meet all certificate program requirements to be eligible for the Ethnic Studies Certificate. The Ethnic Studies Certificate program works within a social justice agenda and is committed to working in solidarity with historically marginalized communities to transform schooling for all students.

SUMMARY OF POSITION

We are looking for a resourceful and dedicated Academic Coordinator with strong organizational skills and extensive knowledge of Ethnic Studies and the legislative, policy and teaching landscape of California schools. This position will report to the Executive Director of Center X. There are two areas of support that this position will provide. First, the incumbent will serve as campus lead for the administration, coordination and implementation of the Ethnic Studies Certificate Program. The Academic Coordinator will work in partnership with UNEX on application processes, recruiting of students, hiring of instructors, preparing and assessing and monitoring of coursework. The Academic Coordinator will partner with UNEX to shepherd all approvals necessary through required processes, preparing all documents and presentations. The Academic Coordinator will also supervise and monitor all program budgets and expenditures. Secondly, the Academic Coordinator will all coordinate with Departments and Administration across campus who are a part of the Ethnic Studies Certificate Program, presenting student data to faculty to inform curriculum and advising changes. The incumbent will serve as the lead spokesperson for the program for presentations in public and conference forums, representing the program and findings. The Academic Coordinator will actively seek and develop efforts for sustained funding of the Certificate Program including grants and other funding opportunities.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

Ethnic Studies Certificate Program Coordination

• Attend all required meetings with UNEX, program faculty, cross department liaisons

• Serve as the key contact for all communication and updates on the Ethnic Studies Certificate Program

• Create, coordinate, and implement Ethnic Studies Certificate Program coursework

• Create materials, supports and protocols for course and program assessment

• Communicate with all stakeholders about Ethnic Studies Certificate Program information in a timely and clear manner, coordinating and responding to ongoing issues and concerns.

• Develop and oversee the application, recruiting and retention of students and instructors

• Develop, oversee and monitor program budgets and budget processes

• Train, support, and coordinate the work of instructors

Ethnic Studies Certificate Program Lead and Spokesperson

• Communicate with and in schools in local school districts including Los Angeles Unified and statewide regarding Ethnic Studies

• Maintain current knowledge of Ethnic Studies policy and practice

• Monitor score reporting and key assessment performance data for program improvement and related reporting.

• Create and share reports and data analysis for program improvement.

• Archive information from previous results and record data from grant submissions for program improvement analysis and accreditation reporting.

• Actively seek opportunities to present the program and program findings to a variety of audiences, preparing all presentations

• Actively seek grants and other funding opportunities for sustained program funding

• Actively seek to raise awareness of the UCLA Ethnic Studies Certificate Program with University departments and administrators, school districts and policymakers

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• California teaching credential

• 3-years or more of experience as a teacher in a public school in an urban community

• A master’s degree in education or related content area

• Demonstrated knowledge of ethnic studies content and pedagogical approaches

• Experience working with adult learners

• Experience in teacher education and/or teacher professional development

Preferred Qualifications

• Extensive experience in teacher education

• Experience mentoring in-service teachers

• Experience navigating online platforms and tools

• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

• Project Management/Organizational skills

• Experience with grant and proposal writing
